An Arab Conference in Jordan on the ICC

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies, the Arab Center for
International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Education, and the Arab
Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession
co-organize an Arab conference entitled: "The International Criminal Court:
Prospects and Problems". The event will take place in the Hussein Cultural
Center, Amman, Jordan, on 1 July 2002.

The Conference will discuss the jurisdiction of the ICC, trial guarantees,
complimentarity between national and international jurisdictions,
procedural jurisdiction of the court, the applicability of the ICC Statute
over states that are not parties to the treaty, the role of the Security
Council, and other relevant issues on the ICC.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Chairman of the Jordanian Judicial Council,
Chairman of the Jordanian Judges' Institute, Chairman of the Jordanian
Diplomatic Institute, the International Committee for the Red Cross,
European Embassies, and a number of Jordanian juridical and political
figures will participate in the Conference.

It is worthy mentioning that holding this conference coincides with the
announcement of the ICC coming into force on 1 July 2002. It is also worthy
mentioning that Jordan is the only Arab state that ratified the ICC Statute
and was the first Arab state to sign it.

The Conference aims at discussing the means of reinforcing the role of the
ICC in considering the most serious crimes against the human kind, namely
crimes of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of
aggression.

The Conference also aims at raising awareness among Arab jurists of the
importance and role of the ICC in reinforcing international criminal justice.
