Re: First phase of the World Programme for HRE

Dear all,

It gives me great pleasure to talk about education on human rights. It is
extremely wonderful. We at UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency
for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) schools in Jordan started
teaching/learning human rights concepts, tolerance, non-violent
communication and problem solving since 2003. We trained the head teachers
and a great number of teachers on how to integrate the concepts through
curriculua. In each school we have a parliament from the children, elected
in a democratic way aiming to enable our students to live a real
democratic atmosphere in their schools to prepare them to be good
citizens. Each year schools organize competitions focusing on human rights
and related issues through drawings, short stories, plays, songs, lectures
and celebrate the UN days.

My job is Human Rights School supervisor; I supervise 177 schools. When I
visit any of our schools, the school plan contains several activities to
disseminate a human rights culture for teachers, students and parents. In
addition to that the teachers used to put at least one objective
concentrating one of the human rights concepts to be achieved in their
lesson plan. Human rights is an important element to evaluate the
effectiveness of the school towards the quality assurance.

Now a days, as a part of our human rights programme we are working to held
a conference on "safe and stimulating schools" and several NGOs will
participate in this conference. it will be held on the 22nd of March.

All in all, I can claim that human rights, tolerance and non violent
communication is the umbrella for all subjects at schools. It is very
important to uphold the creative and critical thinking and forming the
attitudes in the right direction.

Thank you
