Most women are struggling for an equal and democratic society in the world, and Bangladesh is no exception. I would suggest the following innovatives as part of effective actions in making women rights a fact in a society where women are not even considered as human beings: (a) Like charity, the main challenge to achieve equality remains and begins at home. Women's contributions have to be honored, and their courage to face the barriers to their participation, must be acknowledged and recognized. So it is important that both girls and boys be treated equally at home in order to not reproduce women's traditional roles and machismo. (b) The challenge of the women should be not only to unite all the diverse women's groups, but also to educate them strengthening their awareness of women's human rights and to sharpen their skills for effective political participation. This is especially important for the large number of small groups working on income generating projects and community initiatives. I would consider this as a process of empowering women to achieve not only their basic needs, but also their strategic interests that enable them to take control over their own lives. I hope this will assist somewhat as you plan your course of action Hamsa Samir Jordan ======== Global Human Rights Education listserv ======= Send mail intended for the list to < >.
