South Africa: Report on the Public Hearing on the Right to Basic Education

Dear All,

The South African Human Rights Commission released its report on the Right
to Basic Education on 13 June 2006. The report can be accessed at
http://www.sahrc.org.za/sahrc_cms/publish/article_177.shtml

Apart from focussing on the right to education, the report also provides a
sober picture of the complex context within which HRE seeks to find
expression in South Africa. It also provides insights into the
organisation of education in South Africa as the backdrop against which we
are agitating for the practise of HRE in schools. This, as the report will
show, is a mammoth task given the socio-economic and psycho-social context
of education in our country.

I also had the privilege to meet with Peter McLaren (UCLA/ I made a
mistake in my previous posting) and his two colleagues in South Africa on
5 June 2006. HRE practitioners will find his website very useful on the
matters of critical pedagogy and Marxist humanism.
