Students protest against ultranationalist education minister 13.06.2006 -- Members of the Students’ Initiative demanded talks this morning with education and deputy prime minister Roman Giertych of the far-right League of Polish Families and when they were refused, attempted to occupy the ministry building. The students burned a straw figure of the minister vaguely reminding of Frankenstein and stormed the ministry. They were forcibly removed by security guards and police. Minister Giertych has recently further enraged Polish teachers by removing the head of the Centre of Teachers’ Education, officially for publishing a book which invited gay activists to schools which turned out to be an official manual of Council of Europe on human rights education. The talks which were finally held with Deputy Minister, as Minister Giertych escaped from the building by a side entrance, were inconclusive.
