CIHRS holds a training workshop for media professionals in Sudan

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) organizes a training
workshop, entitled "Media and Building Diversity and Democratic Culture in
Sudan." The training will be held in Khartoum in the period from 5th to
11th of February 2006. It is organized in cooperation with the Sudanese
Radio and Television Association and supported by the European Commission,
with the participation of approximately 35 journalists working in the
Sudanese Radio and television. A group of media and Human Rights experts
from Sudan, Egypt and Canada will participate in the workshop.

The objective of the training workshop is to offer a series of practical
skills and knowledge related to the issues of cultural diversity and human
rights, and their relationship to the media in Sudan. In selecting the
participants, special care was given to have the various groups in Sudan
represented, including ethnic and religious groups, as well as women.

The workshop program includes a diverse set of activities, including five
training sessions; three round table sessions, and five general lectures,
in addition to one day designed for presentation of the diverse
experiences in Sudanese arts and literature. The activities will cover a
series of issues related to media and cultural diversity, related to
culture, ethnicity, language, and religion in international human rights
law; management of cultural diversity through audiovisual mass media; the
general situation of freedom of media in Sudan; a presentation of a series
of experiences in the media in Sudan; freedom of opinion and expression,
and the independence of media during the period of interim arrangements in
Sudan.
