Re: Integration of HRE within formal education



Dear friends and colleagues,

The questions are very interesting, relevant and related each to the
other. I just came from Lima, Peru where I participated in the twenty-year
anniversary of the Peruvian Institute of Human Rights and Peace (IPEDEHP).
Many of the questions were addressed at the seminar.

In my opinion HRE should be introduced at all levels of formal education,
in different formats and levels - using the following same methodological
principles:

• I always try to appeal to the experiences of day-to-day life of
the students;
• I don't give recipes - I don't have the last word, but challenge
the students with real problems that they face in their life;
• I do much efforts to show the conflicts and contradictions that
human rights
face in our society-community-school family and in ourselves;
• I try not to hide or put away the political conflicts that human
rights face;
• I try not to avoid the rational and particularly the emotional
aspects that are integrated in HRE;
• Since I am not an artist I try to invite artists to help me. The
coming week we will have at the University a workshop on poetry and
literature and human rights. Many poets a writers are invited.
• In my opinion we should show that HRE breaks with the traditional
pedagogy and does not reproduce the dominant pedagogy. Human rights
education is part of a movement of liberation and emancipation.
Therefore our methodology should be consistent with this paradigm.
• Finally there is NOT ONE STRATEGY TO INTRODUCE HRE IN THE
CURRICULUM.
