IDEA-NL an independent membership association of organizations and
individuals that support debate (a formal contest of argumentation between
two teams in which one team supports, while the other team opposes, a
given proposition), human rights and civic education worldwide. IDEA is
registered in the Netherlands as a not-for profit membership organization.
IDEA provides assistance to debate and educational institutions worldwide.
IDEA is currently looking for a Development Director to be based in the
Netherlands.

1.    DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Job Title:  Development Director
Reports To: Executive Director of IDEA


SUMMARY:

IDEA is seeking a full-time Development Director who will establish and
develop an IDEA office in the Netherlands, build policy and financial
support for projects operated by IDEA and/or its members, from European
sources, including the European Union, Dutch government, other national
governments, private foundations and corporations in Europe.

The Development Director would report to IDEA's Executive Director, and
work regularly with IDEA's Director of Training and Curriculum and other
staff.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Establish an IDEA office in the Netherlands.  Working with the
Executive Director of IDEA and with the advice and consent of the IDEA
Board of Directors, the Development Officer will seek office space,
preferably in a university setting, that can house IDEA's Dutch-based
operations.
* Work cooperatively with IDEA's staff and its members to develop and
implement a plan for encouraging non-governmental and government support
for projects.
* Develop contacts and relationships within the Dutch and other European
governments and institutions, non-governmental organizations, and
international institutions, as well as foundations and private funders
that further the objectives of the office.
* Represent the projects and programs of IDEA to potential funders and
supporters in Europe.
* Research European foundations and government programs that might fund
or support IDEA's international programs.
* Manage correspondence that effectively describes the ideas and work of
IDEA.
* Prepare and submit reports to donors on grants and donations received.
* Understand IDEA project budgets and finances in order to explain and
interpret them to potential supporters and funders.


QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, the Development Director must be able
to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed
below are representative of the experience required:

* A university degree in a relevant area;
* Experience with Dutch, EU and European Commission fundraising;
* Experience in preparing proposals for various European Union funding
organizations;
* Experience in managing grants, including reporting;
* Experience with corporate fundraising;
* Experience in representing an NGO to government and business leaders;
* Experience in corresponding via letters, memoranda and reports with
senior- level government and business officials.

LANGUAGE ABILITY

The Development Director must be able to read, write, and speak English
and Dutch proficiently.  Another major European language is desirable.


INTERNATIONAL DEBATE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (IDEA)

Since 1994 IDEA has introduced debate to secondary schools and
universities throughout Central and Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet
Union, Central Asia, and Haiti and continues to grow throughout the
world. IDEA currently has members in 40 countries.

IDEA develops civic education and human rights curricula and works
closely with educational institutions (ministries of education, teacher
training institutes, and educational colleges). IDEA organizes trainings
for teachers and educators in debate education and interactive methods
of working with young people. IDEA also runs educational events for
secondary school students: workshops, competitions and forums. IDEA also
offers trainings in communication and advocacy for other profession
groups (NGO personnel, human rights advocates) and community leaders. To
