2. LOOKING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND THE EUROPEAN MASTERS ON HUMAN RIGHTS
AND DEMOCRATIZATION, 2005/2006

Dear Colleagues,

My name is Teresa Encarnação. I am a 26 years old Portuguese citizen.

I hold a Licenciatura (4 years degree) in Political Science, from the
Technical University of Lisbon, of which I was top class student, awarded.

Since April 2003, I am the Coordinator of CIDESC International Centre on
Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, a Portuguese civic association. I
have worked for the United Nations Information Centre, in Lisbon, as an
intern; in private companies; and as a Research Technician for the
Ministry of Science and Technology, in Portugal.

In order to further my knowledge on Human Rights, I accomplished to be
granted full scholarships to attend the Courses In the Service of Peace:
Civilian Core Competences in Peace Operations, at the Pearson Peacekeeping
Centre, Canada (2004) and the II Global Learning Programme on Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights, Dignity International, Portugal (2003). My
current field of expertise is in Human Rights and Political Affairs.

At present, it is my goal to obtain an MA in Human Rights as a mean to
further prepare myself to continue a career in the Human Rights /
Humanitarian Assistance field. Thus, I am preparing my application for the
European Masters on Human Rights and Democratization, to be held in Italy,
in 2005/2006.

As I do not possess the financial means to cover the expenses, I hereby
request information on how to obtain a scholarship to attend this specific
Masters Programme.

Curriculum Vitae and Presentation Letter are available on request.

Many thanks.

3. CALL FOR ATTORNEYS TO PARTICIPATE IN HUMAN RIGHTS MOOT COURT
COMPETITION

The Academy for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University
Washington College of Law invites all attorneys interested in
international law to participate as a judge in the Tenth Annual
Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition, taking place May
22-27, 2005. This unique Competition aims to familiarize students with
the jurisprudence created by the organs of the Inter-American system for
the promotion and protection of human rights as well as to promote
interaction and exchanges among students, academics, diplomats and
practitioners. Equally important, the week-long Competition helps a new
generation of lawyers understand the importance of respecting divergent
opinions, intellectual rigor and the values that underpin the discourse of
human rights.

Volunteering as a judge gives you the opportunity to participate in a
unique training and mentoring program of students from around the world.
Last year, 47 teams from 14 different countries participated in the
Competition, involving over 150 students and faculty. Over 70 volunteer
attorneys participated in the Competition, grading written briefs,
questioning students in over 50 oral round sessions, welcoming students on
visits to their organizations, and speaking at the Competition's training
seminar.

The Competition also provides you with a wonderful opportunity to network
with other accomplished attorneys, diplomats and judges. Whether it is
prior to grading an oral round session or at one of the many receptions
held during the week of the Competition, many excellent opportunities
exist where you can meet other attorneys interested in international human
rights law.

Finally, the Competition offers you the opportunity to explore
cutting-edge legal issues currently being considered both in the
Inter-American system and international legal frameworks. This year's
hypothetical case addresses the question of detaining terrorist suspects
and the use of torture techniques in interrogation. Students will argue
the need for a state to defend its people from terrorist attacks while
protecting the rights of suspects.

If you are committed to international law and human rights, you will
surely enjoy participating as a judge in this Competition. Judges can
grade the written memorials (submitted April 15th) and/or the oral round
sessions during the week of the Competition. Either way, your
participation is critical in sustaining the long-term impact of human
rights education in the Americas as well as in supporting the months of
preparation undertaken by nearly 100 young lawyers who will join us in
Washington, DC for the Competition.

To volunteer as a judge, please fill out a judge registration form online
at wcl.american.edu/humright/mcourt/2005/online_registration_judge.cfm For
more information, please contact the Competition Organizers at

5. SEEKING RESOURCES ON HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING FOR JOURNALISTS (ARMENIA)

Dear Colleagues,

The UNDP project which aims at promoting human rights by building public
awareness of human rights plans to undertake activities to enhance
knowledge of local journalists on human rights in order to contribute to
improvement of media coverage on human rights issues in Armenia. It would
be great to learn about experiences of others in this field. I would very
much appreciate to receive feedback from organisations that have
experience in organising training for journalist on human rights reporting
or from individuals who can name an organisation/expert to refer to.

I thank you in advance for all feedback.
