Citizenship and human rights education in schools in Cameroon

Dear colleagues,

My names is Elizabeth Tamajong. As the president of a group of sixty women
of the Anglophone origin, on Human Rights Day I invited a legal expert to
enlighten our women on their voting and minority rights to Yaoundé. As the
National Assistant Secretary General of the main opposition party, I
called on the government to release those Cameroonians who were locked up
at the various police districts during the October 11th presidential
elections.

I also taught my students of the Higher Teacher Training College the
rights of the teacher and pupils/students. The so-called contract teachers
were called upon to demonstrate for their unpaid three years salary.

Following our research work, seminar and conferences the National Human
Rights Commission has been forced to include teaching of Citizenship and
Human Rights Education in schools in its programme for 2005.

One of the challenges that we have in Cameroon is teaching the youths to
fight corruption. The image of Cameroon has been tarnished due to
corruption and other aspects of human rights abuses in the political
scene. We, the educationists and other activists, have a duty to educate
our youths on how to rebuild our country's image. There is no special day
for human rights in Cameroon because our people need constant education
formally, informally and non-formally.

We have a programme to work with NGOs on HRE. You shall be notified when
our platform is completed.

Happy Christmas and prosperous 2005.

Elizabeth Tamajong
