Youth Studies Course with a human rights approach (Tehran, 15-19 August 2004)



First Short Course on Youth Studies
for young participants
15-19 August 2004, Tehran

The first training workshop on youth studies will be held in August 2004
(from 15 to 19 August) for a period of five complete days in Tehran by the
Institute for Young Scholars, a non-governmental organization, based in
Tehran that conducts research on youth issues as well as holds training
workshops, and has accreditation from the National Youth Organization.

Those interested in attending the course should apply in written through
email and they should attach a short biography. The participants should
have at least a MA degree in one of the related disciplines or should
prove that she or he has been working in a non-governmental organization
for the past two years, or can use the knowledge obtained from the course
in her or his work (as a government staff or journalist or an NGO
activist).

This short course will be held at the office of the Institute in Tehran.
The course is open to both Iranians and non-Iranians.

The participants should be registered and pay the registration fee 650 US$
that should be paid through bank transfer. This fee covers only five days
of trainings and materials and certain secretariat work that the Institute
does for the course, seven days of food, accommodation and transportation
within the city.

The course will be held in English. It means that trainers and
facilitators speak in English and the training materials are offered in
English too. The participants should know English well (to write, speak
and read) and this point should be mentioned in their application letter.

The main goal for holding this training course is to familiarize the
participants with the conceptual terms of youth studies based on a human
rights approach. Also the participants will be introduced to working
within youth CBOs and NGOs, group dynamism, leadership, field study, and
young people in cyberspace as well as human rights of young people. The
course is a kind of participatory workshop, in which the participants will
work together, and also they will have a chance to new more about the
Iranian society and the young people and their demands in Iran.

Activists of youth rights and representatives of non-governmental
organizations, government young managers, students of all related fields,
journalists and other persons interested in the issue can apply to attend
at the course.

For the selection of the participants, a gender and geographical balance
will be observed.

The course will be held with a minimum of 15 persons and a maximum of 25
people. If the course can not reach to its optimum minimum of 15 persons,
it will be canceled for the Summer course 2004, and will be held in
another time during the next Fall. Those who have requested and accepted
will be informed in due time.

Those interested to attend at the course, should send his or her
curriculum vitae before June 10, 2004, with a cover letter that shows why
they are interested in attending the course via email
(youthstudies@ifys.org). The requests will be studied by the scientific
board of the Institute, and if accepted, they will be informed duly so
that the participants can start the visa process and transfer of training
fee.

The Institute offers no fellowship for this course, however participants
can request for a fellowship from their university or non-governmental
organizations or other international organizations. The Institute will
issue a letter of initial acceptance during the third week of May for
those who are accepted and would like to profit from a grant or
fellowship.

If the participants would like, can remain one more week in Iran after the
course, to visit Shiraz and Isfahan, two very beautiful cities of Iran.
