Bringing them home Education Module by HREOC-Australia

The Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) has
developed a range of human rights education resources which are available
free of charge via our Information for Teachers Website @
http://www.humanrights.gov.au/info_for_teachers/index.html

The latest resources released by HREOC include the Bringing them home
Education Module, which is accessible via the HREOC website @
http://www.humanrights.gov.au/bth/index.htm

In particular, the Bringing them home Education module will help students
explore:

*	the history, laws and practices of forcible separation of
Indigenous children from their families
*	the effects of separation on individuals, families and
communities
*	the recommendations aimed at healing the pain caused by
separation
*	responses to the Bringing them home report since it was first
published.

The resource also includes a number of real-life stories by those affected
by forcible separation, providing a personal perspective into the effects
of these past policies and the need for healing.

Activities and teaching resources for Juniors (Yrs 6-8) and Seniors (Yrs
9-11) will help teachers and students make the most of the material.
Current teaching strategies have been used to structure these activities,
with a major focus on literacy skills, including critical literacy, code
breaking and comprehension skills, through reading and responding to a
variety of texts. A variety of whole-class, group, paired and individual
projects are included, with students engaged through 'webcrawl'
activities, design projects, creative writing activities, local history
projects, role-playing activities and youth roundtable exercises, as
examples of this contemporary scaffolded approach to learning.
