WORKSHOP ON PEACE IN THE SOUTH ASIAN REGION

The world's political stage has certain "hot-spots" where one sees that
there is always tension. In these places there is either open conflict or
conflict constantly simmering beneath a seemingly peaceful façade
Israel-Palestine and parts of the Middle-East, to name a few. One
perennial "hot-spot" is the South Asian region epitomised in the Indo-Pak
conflict that swings between open hostility to a guardedly proffered hand
of friendship.

The World Social Forum, with its slogan ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE provides
the platform to dream. The dream is not only of a new world in the face of
the onslaught of globalisation, but also the possibility of building a
world devoid of conflict. A new world where there is not only a situation
of NO WAR but a situation of true peace.

In this context, the South Asian Peace Initiative proposes to have a
workshop during the WSF to help people to understand the dynamics of
political situation in South Asia. Eminent speakers from various countries
of South Asia will be on a panel that will lay bare the intricacies of the
situation in South Asia which results in conflicts. Participants will be
helped to understand the situation through the various presentations by
the panellists and will have an opportunity to interact with them to gain
a deeper understanding of the issues at stake.

Having understood the situation, participants will be encouraged to get
into groups and share about initiatives already taken and in-roads already
made at various levels to promote peace. Participants will also share on
what civil society can do to contribute to the peace processes.

It is hoped that this workshop will contribute to the dream of the WSF
ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE, if the participants are motivated to go back to
their own countries and make a contribution, however small, to bringing
about peace. Hopefully, these small initiatives of civil society would
snowball into a movement of peace that would ultimately result in South
Asia being taken off the world map of "hot-spots" of conflict. An
unrealistic dream? But we believe that another world is possible, don't
we?
