Humanity in Action (HIA) works with a consortium of American and European universities and in cooperation with the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. In its programs, HIA integrates minority issues with the history of World War II and the Holocaust. It involves leaders of human rights organizations, politics, diplomacy, philanthropy, journalism, and science. HIA focuses on three interrelated areas of historic and contemporary importance: 1. Examples of resistance to the Holocaust; 2. Development of international human rights institutions and doctrines through new standards, rules and procedures after World War II and the Holocaust; 3. Current human rights and minority issues in Denmark, German, the Netherlands, and the United States. The six-week, all expense-paid programs run simultaneously in Copenhagen, Berlin, and Amsterdam in early summer every year. Through a program of lectures, discussions, site visits and research projects, the students, or HIA Fellows, explore the complexities of minority issues in these three European countries and in the United States. At the end of the programs, teams of Fellows write and present reports on minority issues in the three European host countries. The reports are later published by HIA. The programs involve a total of 60 university students, 30 from the United States and ten each from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. Before heading to Europe, the American students have already completed three days of seminars at the Holocaust Museum, while the European students visit the Museum and New York City after the summer programs, focusing on the study of American minority issues. All costs are paid by HIA.
