Regional workshop on human rights investigation and fact-finding techniques (New Delhi, 24-25 November 2003)

Human Rights Investigation And Fact-Finding Techniques
24-25 November, 2003
Venue : Indian Social Institute
10 Institutional Area, Lodi Road, New Delhi 110 003, India

Dear Friends,

This is for your kind information that the Human Rights Unit of the
Indian Social Institute is organizing a two-day regional training workshop
on Human Rights Investigation and Fact-Finding Techniques for social
workers, lawyers and human rights defenders with support and inputs from
the National Human Rights Commission.

The content selection and programme design have been done by the
Department of Investigation, National Human Rights Commission. The experts
from the Commission will conduct the training.

A glance over facts and figures would reveal that there is hardly any
respite from the incidents of atrocity, rape, bondage of labour, child
labour, displacement, deprivations and humiliations. The social activists
and researchers conduct studies and unearth the huge stock of facts and
figures. Their findings, however, often fail to stand as valid legal and
advocacy tool for the reason that certain essential elements inadvertently
miss out of them. Due to simple technical flaws a large amount of
important documents thus lose chances to become instrumental for
international and national legal actions against the perpetrators of human
rights violations. If proper orientation and training can be provided to
the social activists regarding the scientific investigation technique, it
is anticipated that the findings coming out of the independent
fact-findings studies will turn to be extremely useful.

The two-day regional training workshop aims at imparting better
orientation for investigation technique and also skills and capacity to
conduct fact-finding studies systematically. Given the credibility in
public awakening and advocacy work your Organisation has earned, we hope
this training will be of great help to your future activities.

We write this letter to request you to nominate participants for this
training programme.

Some of the subjects proposed to be covered in the training include
interviewing and questioning skills, people to be interviewed, PEACE model
of investigation, report writing etc. The methods of training will be
interactive infused with appropriate exercises. The language of the
training will be English.

The number of seats is 25. The registration fee is Rs. 100/- payable
by cash or cheque (in favour of Indian Social Institute).

   With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,
