Dear List members, This year the Global HRE List is celebrating its four-year anniversary. We hope that you have continued to enjoy the Global HRE listserv this year. We have continued to serve 3,200 members from approximately 155 countries around the world. Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) is pleased to be able to host and moderate this list, and we thank you for your participation and contributions over the past year. The List continues to be a major source of information and networking. For example, over the past twelve months, we posted 89 training opportunities, 21 internships, fellowships, consultancies and other job opportunities, and 28 announcements of new publications in the field. We also had intense and enlightening discussions on human rights education (HRE) and critical pedagogy; if and how to evaluate the impact of HRE; and what constitute a "human rights culture". Moreover, the List was also a platform for an on-line consultation on possible follow-up to the UN Decade for Human Rights Education, which resulted in report with policy recommendations submitted to the UN Commission on Human Rights. This is the first and last time in 2003 that we will be asking for membership support. We would like to sincerely ask those listserv members who are in a position to do so to make a contribution to the continued operation of the List. These donations are tax-deductible in both the Netherlands (41216486) and the United States (04 3428 879). Checks or (international) money orders in U.S. dollars can be sent to the U.S. office of HREA, P.O. Box 382396, Cambridge, MA 02238-2396 USA. On-line donations via credit card are also possible at: http://www.hrea.org/lists/hr-education/index.html. All amounts are welcome and appreciated. Because of the success of Global HRE list, partner organisations in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East are collaborating with HREA in creating regional listservs in Arabic, French, Russian and English. The Asian-Pacific HRE listserv was launched in June 2003 by the Asian Regional Resource Center in Bangkok and we anticipate the launching of an Arabic language HRE listserv by the Cairo Institute of Human Rights Studies later in 2003. These complement the existing regional listservs in Spanish/Portuguese (IIDH, Costa Rica), Russian (Moscow School for Human Rights) and the newly established North American HRE listserv launched by HREA in May. These listservs are interconnected and will be hosted on HREA's website. On behalf of the HREA staff, I would like to personally thank listserv members for their excellent contributions. Every day we learn something new from the ideas, questions and experiences that you share. HREA looks forward to facilitating many more years of dialogue with this unique community of human rights educators and advocates.
