Students from all African countries are invited to apply for admission to study for the Master's Degree (LLM) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa, organised by the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria in partnership with the University of Ghana, Makerere University (Uganda), the University of the Western Cape (South Africa), the American University in Cairo (Egypt) and the Catholic University of Central Africa (Cameroon). Duration: One academic year, full time, from 1 February to 1 December COURSE CONTENT: First semester: 6 months at the University of Pretoria -Methodology of human rights research and education -Democratisation in Africa -International and comparative human rights -Human rights in Africa -Introduction to the South African legal system and Bill of Rights -Human rights in practice: Field trip Second semester: 6 months at one of the other partner law faculties: -Accredited courses -Dissertation Method of instruction: -Formal lectures (world experts in the field of human rights) -Practical exercises (emphasis is on classroom participation) -There is ample opportunity for informal interaction between the students and lecturers. Facilities: -Extensive library facilities -24-hour access to computers -A substantial part of the course is dedicated to the use of the Internet in research on human rights law. Medium of instruction: -English. Students must have a good working knowledge in order to follow lectures and participate fully in class discussions and practical exercises. Financial assistance: -Bursaries are available Admission: -Admission is on a competitive basis. -Applicants must be in possession of a first degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent) and should submit the following documentation: 1.
