LLM IN HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRATISATION IN AFRICA 2004
CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA

A regional cooperation initiative under the auspices of the 
Association of African Universities (AAU), the focus of this premier 
course is human rights as seen from the African perspective.

Students from all African countries are invited to apply for 
admission to study for the Master's Degree (LLM) in Human Rights and 
Democratisation in Africa, organised by the Centre for Human Rights, 
Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria in partnership with the 
University of Ghana, Makerere University (Uganda), the University of 
the Western Cape (South Africa), the American University in Cairo 
(Egypt) and the Catholic University of Central Africa (Cameroon).

Duration: One academic year, full time, from 1 February to 1 December

COURSE CONTENT:

First semester: 6 months at the University of Pretoria

-Methodology of human rights research and education
-Democratisation in Africa
-International and comparative human rights
-Human rights in Africa
-Introduction to the South African legal system and Bill of Rights
-Human rights in practice: Field trip

Second semester: 6 months at one of the other partner law faculties:
-Accredited courses
-Dissertation

Method of instruction:
-Formal lectures (world experts in the field of human rights)
-Practical exercises (emphasis is on classroom participation)
-There is ample opportunity for informal interaction between the 
students and lecturers.

Facilities:
-Extensive library facilities
-24-hour access to computers
-A substantial part of the course is dedicated to the use of the 
Internet in research on human rights law.

Medium of instruction:
-English. Students must have a good working knowledge in order to 
follow lectures and participate fully in class discussions and 
practical exercises.

Financial assistance:
-Bursaries are available

Admission:
-Admission is on a competitive basis.
-Applicants must be in possession of a first degree in Law (LL.B or 
equivalent) and should submit the following documentation:

1. Curriculum Vitae (include your full particulars: name, address, 
telephone, fax and e-mail contacts)
2. Detailed academic record (subjects taken and marks obtained)
3. Certified copies of degree certificates (do not send originals)
4. 2 letters of recommendation/support
5. If applicable, a note on your financial position indicating why 
you would need assistance. 
6. A covering letter stating why you would like to do the course
7. If you did not do your undergraduate studies in English, proof of 
your proficiency in English
8. A recent photograph
