Report on HRE at the UN Commission on Human Rights (59th Session)

Dear Global HRE Listserv Members,

A report on HRE at the UN Commission on Human Rights recently held in
Geneva is now available. It contains elements on the following:

I. The UN Decade for Human Rights Education in the UN system
II. NGO work aimed at promoting an effective resolution
III. Consultation process and adoption
IV. Evaluation of the core elements of the resolution
V. Reflection on NGO strategies

The report is based on the common initiative and activities undertaken in
Geneva by Soka Gakkai international (SGI), Summer University of Human
Rights (SUHR), and the International Organisation for the Right to
Education and Freedom of Education (OIDEL) to promote human rights
education.

Costa Rica, as sponsor of the resolution on the UN Decade for Human Rights
Education, has been very open to NGO suggestions. Information and
technical advice were also kindly provided by the UN human rights officer
in charge of the programmes of the Decade.

The report is available on the HREA homepage: http://www.hrea.org

I hope that it will be useful to all who are committed to promoting human
rights education and will enable us to develop a common strategy for the
follow-up of the current Decade.

Sincerely yours,

Kazunari Fujii
