Dear friends and colleagues: This week, in a beautiful ceremony that was presided by the General Executive of UNESCO that came to Chile directly from Paris, was signed, among other agreements, the protocol that creates the UNESCO Chair of Human Rights Education at the university where I work. I was appointed coordinator of the "Cathedra" (Chair). I am very proud and happy that after three year of efforts we now belong to an important network of educators that are pursuing common goals: to advance knowledge in human rights education. We hope that with the support of the Cathedra we will strength our contacts. UNESCO has created in different fields and disciplines such Chairs all over the world. They are located mainly at universities. The Cathedras in Human Rights Education in Latin America are already functioning in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil and now in Chile. Our Cathedra is located at the Universidad de la Academia de Humanismo Cristiano, a private university created during Pinochet's time to offer a space to academicians that for political reasons weren't accepted in other universities. Today the university has approximately 2000 students, mainly from poor economical background, offering different careers, particularly in social sciences (psychology, anthropology, law, education, etc). The main purpose of the HRE Chair is to run research on HRE. There is a lack of systematic knowledge in the field of HRE. We will like to answer important questions that have been asked related to methodology and evaluation in HRE. The Cathedra will open courses and teaching on HRE in a very interdisciplinary form. Particularly we want to run seminars where scholars from different discipline will have the opportunity to discuss issues of human rights and HRE that are relevant to our political, economical and social context. We will try to organize workshops in HRE, mainly for teachers. We have to gain experience in training of trainers (TOT). We want grow the Cathedra, if we will have the financial resources, and to explore ways to get to the mass media, to reach a big audience and explain what do human rights mean in our daily existence, what is the role of HRE, etc. Cariņos Abraham Abraham Magendzo E-mail: abrahamm@manquehue.net ======== Global Human Rights Education listserv ======== Send mail intended for the list to <hr-education@hrea.org>.
