International Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights: An Intensive Workshop
R12.1155 / Non-Credit Conference / $175
Friday, October 4th, 10 am-4pm
Faculty: Maria N. Green, Director, International Anti-Poverty Law Center

NGO and foundation staff, UN staff, diplomats, lawyers, journalists,
students, and anyone interested in human rights . . . explore the laws,
mechanisms, and practices that underlie the internationally recognized
human rights to education, food, health, housing, and work.

Taught by Maria Green, a lawyer and practitioner in human rights, the
course addresses questions such as: What do these internationally
recognized economic, social, and cultural rights mean in practice? Are
they fundamentally different from civil and political rights like the
right to political participation? What are governments supposed to do to
protect these rights? What are the UN mechanisms for overseeing them, and
what are the practices of NGOs in advocating around them?

Areas covered include: overview of the international human rights legal
system; UN human rights mechanisms; economic, social and cultural
rights-the obligations of governments and the role of NGOs; and the role
of economic, social, and cultural rights in international development.
