INVITATION
From 14 to 16 October 2002 in Banjul, The Gambia, The Institute for
Human Rights and Development in Africa and the International Commission
of Jurists will organise a workshop on human rights litigation in
Africa.
The bilingual (English/French) workshop will address issues critical to
human rights litigation at both the national and international levels,
such as funding for litigation, locus standi, assessing impartiality of
the court and other fair trial issues, press strategies in relation to
litigation, and use of international treaties.
The workshop will be limited to 20 lawyers who have either presented
communications under Article 55 of the African Commission, or whose
national-level litigation is being supported through the ICJ's Access to
Justice Initiative.
The dates of the workshop have been fixed so as to permit participants
to attend the first two days of the African Commission's 32nd Ordinary
session, which will be held in Banjul beginning on October 17.
If you are interested in attending the workshop, please submit a brief
summary of the case(s) (facts and legal issues) that you or your
organisation have brought to the African Commission or before the courts
of your country to <info@africaninstitute.org>, no later than 16
September. Please see Part B for case details.
Participants are expected to fund their travel to Banjul; only under
exceptional circumstances will travel grants be available. The
organisers of the workshop will cover participants' expenses during the
five-day period.

Du 14 au 16 octobre 2002 à Banjul, Gambie, l'Institut pour les Droits
Humains et le Développement en Afrique et la Commission Internationale
de Juristes organisent un atelier sur le contentieux des droits humains
en Afrique.
Cet atelier bilingue (Français/Anglais) traitera de
questions importantes du contentieux des droits humains au niveau
national et au niveau international, telles que le financement des
litiges, le locus standi, l'appréciation de l'impartialité des
tribunaux ainsi que d'autres questions relatives à l'équité des
procès, aux stratégies de presse en matière de litiges et à
l'utilisation des traités internationaux.
L'atelier sera limité à une vingtaine de juristes
qui ont soit présenté des communications dans le cadre de l'Article
55 de la Charte africaine des droits de l'homme et des peuples, soit
obtenu une aide du programme d'Initiative d'Accès à la Justice de la
CIJ pour un litige au niveau national [1].
Les dates de l'atelier ont été fixées afin de
permettre aux participants d'assister aux deux premières journées de
la 32e Session ordinaire de la Commission africaine qui se tiendra à
Banjul à partir du 17 octobre.
Si vous souhaitez assister à cet atelier, vous êtes
prié de soumettre un bref résumé du cas (faits et questions de
droit) que vous, ou votre organisation, avez introduit devant la
Commission africaine ou devant les tribunaux de votre pays sur
<info@africaninstitute.org> et au plus tard le 16 septembre. Pour les
détails du cas, référez-vous à la Partie B.
Les participants sont supposés financer leur transport
jusqu'à Banjul. Des aides ne pourront être accordées à cet effet
que dans des cas très limités. Les organisateurs couvriront les
dépenses des participants pendant les cinq jours que durera l'atelier.
