The Patrick Stewart Human Rights Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the field of human rights. Amnesty International USA awards these scholarships to student activists for summer internships or other short-term human rights projects. Ranging from $300 to $1,800, scholarships can be used for travel, materials, and other expenses. How do I Plan a Project / Internship? * Choose a Focus: Consider what human rights issues or what regions of the world are most interesting to you. Your focus can be in the U.S. or on other local issues. * Find a Location and an Organization: Research organizations that work on issues of interest and contact them to discuss how you can contribute to their work. You can also design an independent project. * Develop a Specific Project: Work with the organization to develop your role, tasks and duties. What kinds of projects will you be working on? What are your goals? What will the project accomplish? * Draft a Budget: Estimate housing, travel, food, material and other costs for your project. How to Apply To apply, propose a specific project or internship that addresses a human rights issue that you have experience or interest in. You can apply for an independent project or an internship with a national, local, or international human rights organization - in the United States or abroad. Most scholarships are awarded for projects that incorporate hands-on experience, research and development of activist skills. Projects typically last six weeks to four months. You can apply online at: http://www.amnestyusa.org/patrickstewart/applicationform.html After you complete your project, you will submit a report and an action plan for future work in human rights. For example, Amnesty International USA may invite some scholarship recipients to serve in voluntary leadership roles, such as helping with human rights campaigns, education, and outreach. Who Can Apply? The Patrick Stewart Human Rights Scholarship is open to high school, college, and graduate students who attend U.S. schools and U.S. citizens who are studying abroad.
