AUC Main Campus, Hill House, 6th floor lounge Mohamed Mahmoud Street Entrance This short-course introduces students to the current academic debates on nationalism, regionalism and ethnicity as key determinants of group identity and belonging on the global and local levels. In the context of forced migration, it makes special reference to both historical and contemporary case studies drawn from Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Africa in order to map the various processes of group identity formation. It compares Western and non-Western models of nationalism and ethnicity including state attempts to implement them as part of social engineering (e.g. Soviet Federalism, South African Apartheid). It also compares the different state policy options for 'ethnic survival' and examines how group identities were maintained in the past and their prospects in the future. The course considers the protection and promotion of group culture in a global context. Register now! Places are limited.
