3RD YOUTH SUMMIT TOWARDS A HUMAN RIGHTS YOUTH ACTION NETWORK October 26 to 30, 2001 Baguio City, Philippines Amnesty International Pilipinas-Human Rights Youth Action Network (AIP-HRYAN) is an autonomous collective of young Filipino human rights activists from various schools and other civil society groups. It aims to build a human rights culture for the youth and by the youth. AI-HRYAN believes that young people are key stakeholders in the protection, promotion and fulfillment of human rights. Its programs include human rights education, advocacy and international solidarity work. We are currently organizing the Third Youth Summit Towards A Youth Action Network On Human Rights. This year’s theme will be “A Conspiracy of Hope: Human Rights Culture, Human Rights Future!” Such gathering of young people is intended to take place from October 26 to 30, 2001 and is anticipated to be held in Baguio City. The event features a series of lectures, workshops, outdoor activities, debates and negotiations, and cultural presentations. All are aimed to let young people speak up and get actively involved in the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights. The summit proper is divided into three main themes: 1. Universality of Human Rights - Human Rights and Human Dignity - National and Global Human Rights Situation - Indivisibility of Civil and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights 2. Contextualizing Human Rights - Racial Discrimination - Ethnicity and Diversity - Gender and Human Rights - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Rights - Children’s Rights - International Solidarity (Burma Issues) 3. Youth as Active Human Rights Advocates - Concepts and Principles of Effective Activism and Leadership - Human Rights Education… A Tool for Empowerment - Mediation and Conflict Resolution - Role of Media - Internet Activism The youth summit’s objectives are as follows: 1. Educate young people on the basic meaning and principles of human rights; 2. Provide an arena for healthy discourse on current human rights issues affecting young people; 3. Encourage youth participation in the advocacy of human rights within their communities, schools and organizations; and 4. Come up with a strategic and feasible platform of action. Our target participants are 100 young activists and leaders from various schools and universities, grassroots organizations, government agencies and NGO’s. Age requirement is pegged between 15 to 25 years of age. Gender balance shall be maintained. Diversity of religion, educational background, ethnicity and sexual orientation shall be encouraged. Cost of participation is US$60; participants need to covered their own travel expenses.
