International Human Rights Internship Program

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Professional Development and Exchange Project Grants
2001-2002

Grants are available to human rights organizations and activists in
Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, East Central
Europe and Republics of the former Soviet Union for:

-	Training projects, such as:

On-site training: An individual from one country who has particular
expertise in a specific area of work provides training to the staff of an
organization in another country.

Professional attachment: A participant serves as a temporary staff member
of a host organization, acquiring on-the-job training in a specific area
of work or skill.

N.B. IHRIP gives low priority to support for attendance at courses or
workshops. Proposals will be considered only in cases where the desired
training is narrow in focus and fulfills a clearly defined institutional
need.

-	Exchange projects, such as

Study tour: A participant conducts an in-depth investigation into an area
of work by visiting and consulting with two or more human rights or human
rights-related institutions in one or more countries.

Fellowship: An activist with 10 or more years' experience takes some time
to reflect on his/her work and write about it in a way that makes it
accessible to activists in other countries and regions.

With regard to professional attachments, on-site training and study tours:
Since IHRIP's purpose is to help strengthen human rights organizations,
priority is given to applications from organizations. Applications will
be accepted from individuals only when the person has demonstrated a
commitment to human rights activism and is from/works in a country where
there are few, if any, human rights organizations.

Grants cover travel, a basic living stipend and health insurance for the
participant (or trainer). It does not provide support for spouses or
families. Grants vary depending on the location and length of the project
(normally one to three months). Grants typically range from
$1,000-10,000.

With regard to fellowships: Applicants must have a minimum of ten years'
experience in human rights activism with an NGO or NGOs at the local,
national and/or regional levels.

Fellowships are three months to a year in duration. The grant is intended
to cover the activist's living expenses during the fellowship period. It
may also be used to cover related travel costs. Grant size varies
depending upon the requirements of the project as well as its location and
duration. Maximum: $12,000.

Each fellow is required to produce a written paper that will be of direct
relevance and use to human rights activism in his/her own country and in
other countries.

IHRIP is unable to support

- academic research or study
- training where the applicant and the proposed host organization or
trainer are in the same country. IHRIP facilitates the exchange of
experience between activists and organizations in different countries
- training projects which are part of an organization's core work and are
not directed at its staff for example, human rights education programs
targeted to particular sectors of the community
- training for officials or employees of government or quasi-governmental
agencies or bodies

Deadlines for applications are:

	February 28, 2001

	June 30, 2001

	October 31, 2001

All decisions on applications are made by IHRIP's Advisory Board.

Requests for application forms should be sent to: ihrip@iie.org
