Dear members, 1. What kind of activities can be developed? Well, all kinds. In schools HRE could be incorporated not only in civics, but also in several other subjects, such as history, geography, languages - basically all humanities. I am not a technical person but I can easily imagine HRE in environmental science, biology, anthropology.... We are now trying to expand into the out-of-school area because the school environment is always a bit stressful (evaluation, marking, school reports, authoritarian teachers, supervising parents with their own ideas about their children's rights...). In their leisure activities children are more relaxed, and will be willing and ready to be involved in human rights activities. They need to know how. 2. Which target groups and training needs? Every single target group mentioned needs attention. The problem remains who is to do the work? Therefore training trainers I suggest should be given priority attention. So that we have someone who is able to educate others (children and adults alike). Otherwise we shall be going around in circles. 3. There is a general trend to take over developed materials and simply translate them into the "native" language. More often than not they are not suitable for the given environment. So I suggest original materials should be supported in every way, possibly with outside advice. I have just received a batch of such materials from Kuleana, Tanzania. Most impressive! The trouble with original materials is that they require funding and somehow the authorities always tend to prefer the translations of "proven" materials. They have already been tried and proven which allows the authorities to shed responsibility. 4. Funding is absolutely vital and if international organizations and governments helped the NGO's who take the brunt of HRE work it would be just fine. As it is we are burdened by lack of funds and spend much of our time fundraising which is not only boring but is a waste of time which could be spent doing actual HRE work.
