Dear Colleagues, I am the Outreach Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin Joint Center for International Studies in the USA. I am in the process of organizing our annual Global Studies Summer Institute (GSSI) for primary and secondary school teachers, which is scheduled for July 31-August 3, 2000. The GSSI is a four-day program intended to provide educators with an opportunity to learn about and discuss contemporary international issues and their practical applications for the classroom. The title of this year's program is "Age of Crisis or Age of Reason? Teaching Human Rights at the Turn of the Century." The 2000 GSSI will examine international human rights issues including the history and origin of human rights, women's human rights, children's human rights, the role of the United Nations, human rights and refugees, and practical approaches to teaching human rights in the K-12 classroom. During the final day of the program (August 3, 2000), we would like to organize a live videoconference with a speaker(s) from a location outside the United States. The session, which will be attended by the 30 American teachers participating in the GSSI, could be organized in a number of different formats. For example, it might be one speaker discussing a certain aspect of human rights, or it could be an educator--or multiple educators--discussing the importance of human rights education in the country represented. We are excited to work with anyone interested in this opportunity to develop a format that would be mutually beneficial. Please contact me in the near future if you are interested in exploring this idea in detail. I can be reached at <adye@uwm.edu> or at the phone number and address below. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Best regards, Alex Dye ______________________________ Alex Dye, Outreach Coordinator University of Wisconsin Joint Center for International Studies P.O.
