This year, the Canadian Human Rights Foundation (CHRF) plans to recruit interns for partner organizations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. We seek 4 interns who will assist the host organizations in developing and delivering human rights education activities, including joint programs with the CHRF. Information about our programs is available on our web site at: http://www.chrf.ca Each internship is for a maximum of nine months, with up to six months of the assignment abroad. The remaining time will be spent with the CHRF in Montreal for briefings, debriefings and work related to the overseas placement. The internships will be linked to a CHRF project with a host country organization. Prior to departure, interns will be involved in the CHRF's annual three-week International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP), to be held from 11-30 June 2000 in Montreal. CIDA's International Youth Internship Program CIDA's International Youth Internship Program is an employment program for Canadian men and women who are generally between the ages of 19 and 30. It offers recent graduates the opportunity to gain work experience and qualifications in an international setting by participating in sustainable development activities. The program is open to Canadian citizens or those eligible to work in Canada who are recent college or university graduates or in the last year of completing post-secondary studies and who are unemployed or underemployed. INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS 1. Ateneo Human Rights Centre (AHRC). The Philippines The internship with the Ateneo Human Rights Centre (AHRC) will focus on CHRF/AHRC joint activities addressing the legal rights of Asian women migrant workers. Job Description Canadian component. Working with the CHRF Program Officer responsible: - Conduct research and assist in developing training sessions in support of the Migrant Workers' Program; - upon return from placement, assist with writing an evaluation report of the programs in which s/he was involved, and write a narrative report for the overseas internship; - Administrative tasks as assigned; Philippines component. Working with AHRC: - Assist in AHRC's work on: the protection of women migrant workers in the region, children's rights, and human rights mechanism - Assist in the organization of AHRC/CHRF training programs in Manila; - Other tasks as assigned. Overseas Host Organization: The AHRC, which is housed at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law, was established in October 1986 as one of the first university-based institutions engaged in the promotion of peace, development and human rights in the Philippines. Its program focuses on: - the continuing training of human rights advocates, lawyers, law students and grassroots leaders; - monitoring the human rights situation in the Philippines and abroad; - research and publication; - public education on peace, development and human rights; - legal assistance to indigent victims of human rights abuses. The beneficiaries include urban poor communities, women, children, labourers, migrant workers, students, NGOs, and the general public. AHRC has sent several of its staff to the CHRF's International Human Rights Training Program, and has been an active partner in our regional Migrant Workers' Program. 2. Indonesia Canada Human Rights Education Program (ICHREP). Indonesia Working with the CHRF representative in Indonesia, and the Indonesian NGO, Institute for Social Transformation (INSIST), the internship will support the CHRF's Indonesia Canada Human Rights Education Program, which engages Indonesian NGOs in order to strengthen capacity for human rights monitoring and advocacy. Job Description : Canadian component. Working with the CHRF Program Officer responsible: - Assist in researching and developing training sessions for the ICHREP; - Administrative tasks as assigned. Indonesia component. Working with the CHRF Field Manager in Indonesia: - Assist in all facets of the development of a human rights training session for NGOs in Indonesia; - Research and follow-up on possible internships for Indonesian human rights workers with Asian regional human rights organizations; - upon return from placement, assist with writing an evaluation report of the programs in which s/he was involved, and write a narrative report for the overseas internship; - Other tasks as assigned and agreed upon. Overseas Host Organization: The intern will be working directly with the CHRF office in Indonesia which will oversee the ICHREP. The CHRF will be working closely with INSIST in implementing the program. INSIST is a non-governmental organization specializing in strengthening civil society by developing the capacity of non-governmental and other civil society organizations. INSIST provides technical assistance, research and training in the field of social development, with a strong focus on gender, environment and human rights. CHRF has worked with INSIST staff since 1997 on developing training programs in support of a CIDA-sponsored capacity development project with the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights. 3. Centre for Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (CSHRHL), Uzbekistan The internship with the CSHRHL will focus on preparation, design and delivery of a joint program with the CHRF. The Program, a follow-up activity to the CSHRHL/CHRF 1999 Training for Human Rights Trainers Program, targeting women's NGOs, will further address the training needs of these NGOs. Preference in this position will be given to candidates with Russian language skills. Job Description: Canadian component. Working with the Director for CEE & Central Asia Programs and other CHRF staff: - conduct research on women's human rights issues in Uzbekistan and on the latest initiatives and programs conducted by other local and international organizations in Uzbekistan; - in cooperation with the CHRF staff and consultant, develop an outline for a training program to be delivered with CSHRHL in Tashkent in the fall of 2000; - assist with other administrative tasks related to Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Programs; - upon return from placement, assist with writing an evaluation report of the programs in which s/he was involved, and write a narrative report for the overseas internship; Uzbekistan component. Working at the CSHRHL with local staff and CHRF consultant: - assist with preparations of a training program in Uzbekistan; - assist with development of a training manual; - conduct additional research on women's issues to be addressed in the training program; - assist with delivery and evaluation of the training program; - carry out other tasks assigned by the CSHRHL Coordinator and agreed upon by all parties (intern, CHRF, CSHRHL). Overseas Host Organization: The CSHRHL was established by a group of professors of the Tashkent State Law Institute in early 1996 and is dedicated to the promotion of human rights and humanitarian law. It pursues academic programs, sponsors research, provides human rights training and disseminates international human rights instruments. The facilities of the CSHRHL are available to students, academics, government, the legal sector, NGOs and the general public. The CSHRHL is financially supported by the UNHCR office in Tashkent. 4. Youth Human Rights Group (YHRG), Kyrgyzstan The internship will help to strengthen the working relationship between the YHRG and CHRF and contribute to development and design of programs and training capacity in human rights in Kyrgyzstan. Preference in this position will be given to candidates with Russian language skills. Job Description: Canadian component. Working with the Director for CEE & Central Asia Programs and other CHRF staff: - in preparation for the overseas assignment, conduct background research on Kyrgyzstan; - assist with research on human rights education materials, and in cooperation with the CHRF and YHRG staff develop an outline for a training program to be delivered in Bishkek in the fall of 2000; - upon return from placement, assist with writing an evaluation report of the programs in which s/he was involved, and write a narrative report for the overseas internship; - assist with other administrative tasks related to Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Programs. Kyrgyzstan component. Working at the UHRG: - assist with preparation of a training program in Kyrgyzstan; - assist with development of a training manual; - conduct additional research on human rights education in schools and other issues to be addressed in the training program; - assist with delivery and evaluation of the training program; - carry out other tasks assigned by the CSHRHL Coordinator and agreed upon by all parties (intern, CHRF, CHRHL). Overseas Host Organization: Established in 1995, the Youth Human Rights Group (YHRG), a non-governmental, non-profit organization, is devoted to human rights work in the following areas: monitoring of human rights (child labor and refugee children in Kyrgyzstan); working with local legislation (on Youth Policy, Protection and Defense of Children's Rights, a draft law on the Ombudsman in Kyrgyzstan); conducting educational programs and seminars addressing children's rights; providing consultations on human rights violations issues via radio programs, phone, mail and personal meetings through a centre for minors called "Social Reception Room". ======== Global Human Rights Education listserv ======== Send mail intended for the list to <hr-education@hrea.org>.
