HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION SERIES, TOPIC BOOK 3

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights:
A HUMAN RIGHTS PERSPECTIVE

BY DAVID M. DONAHUE

Although teachers, administrators, and textbook publishers are often
hesitant to talk about sexual orientation, schools are hardly silent.
Taunts about their sexuality make school a hostile place for many students.
At the same time, students themselves are increasingly speaking up for
justice and dignity for all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender
identity.

This curriculum furthers thoughtful examination and responsible action
about sexual identity issues by addressing them in the context of human
rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights defines rights such as
the right to education, identity, security, assembly, expression,
employment, health, and family that are highly relevant to the discussion
of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.

Whether the discussion focuses on human rights abuses around the globe or
in the local community, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual. and Transgender Rights: A
Human Rights Perspective helps students see their responsibility to take
action to promote human rights and respond to their abuse.

ABOUT THE HUMAN RIGHTS SERIES

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights: A Human Rights Perspective
is Topic Book 3 in the Human Rights Resource Center's Human Rights
Education Series.

Education in human rights is itself a fundamental human right and also a
responsibility: the Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
exhorts "every individual and every organ of society" to "strive by
teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedom."
Published by the Human Rights Resource Center at the University of
Minnesota, the Human Rights Education Series seeks to meet this
responsibility by providing resources for the ever-growing body of
educators and activists seeking to build a culture of human rights,
especially in the United States. The Human Rights Education Series editor
is Nancy Flowers.

Other publications in the Human Rights Education Series include:

Human Rights Here and Now: Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, edited by Nancy Flowers;

Economic and Social Justice: A Human Rights Perspective
by David Shiman;

Raising Children with Roots, Rights & Responsibilities:
Celebrating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
by Lori Dupont, Joanne Foley, and Annette Gagliardi.
