LGIRTF seeks law student interns (USA)

The Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force (LGIRTF)
seeks qualified volunteer law student interns for the
summer of 2000.

Gain valuable exposure to and experience in a national organization
dedicated to providing legal information to LGBT immigrants and their
partners and advocating for an end to discrimination against LGBT people
under U.S. immigration law.

LGIRTF is a not-for-profit organization that addresses the widespread
discriminatory impact of immigration laws on the lives of lesbians, gay men,
and people with HIV through education, outreach, advocacy and the
maintenance of a nationwide resource and support network. Incorporated in
1994, LGIRTF offers free legal clinics and support group meetings, maintains
a heavily-visited website, publishes a quarterly newsletter, and responds to
hundreds of individual requests for information and assistance each year.
Headquartered in New York City, LGIRTF has chapters in Boston, Chicago, LA,
New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC.

Interns needed to:

- help disseminate legal information about immigration and asylum to
callers.
- conduct interviews of LGBT asylum seekers in need of legal representation.
- recruit volunteer attorneys for LGIRTF's legal clinic and for pro bono
representation of LGIRTF clients.
- assist in researching and writing several informational publications about
everything from sexual orientation and HIV status-based asylum to
employment-based immigration and the legal rights of detained immigrants.

The weekly hours and length of the internship will be determined on an
individual basis according to student availability and LGIRTF needs.
Internships are unpaid, but because LGIRTF is a not-for-profit agency,
volunteering here may qualify with certain schools as fulfillment of
work-study obligations. Prospective interns should contact their campus
Financial Aid office for details. Because interns will come into contact
with sensitive information, a confidentiality agreement must be signed prior
to the beginning of the internship.

Applicants should submit the following:

- A cover letter stating why you would like to be an LGIRTF intern and what
you hope to gain from the internship, what you can contribute to the work of
the LGIRTF office and what your availability is during the summer of 2000.
- Your resume
- A writing sample

Please submit to:
