The Institute of Gender, Law and Development is a non-profit,
non-governmental organization dedicated to the defence of women and
children`s human rights. Established in 1994 in the city of Rosario we
hope to introduce our work and on going projects to a national and
international audience with this first publication.
MISSION STATEMENT: ...to construct a just society based on true democracy
that respects and protects the human rights of women and children. We
strive and work for the advancement and improvement of the social condition
for all women.
“TO CONSTRUCT A HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY IN ROSARIO”
“WHAT´S HAPPENING?”
Here at “INSGENAR”, we have two very important projects that we are
currently working on:
THE ROSARIO HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY and THE REPUBLIC OF WOMEN, FILMS GIVE US
CLUES.
“ROSARIO HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY” is a project initiated by a proposal
framed by “The United Nations Plan of Action for the Decade of Human Rights
Education” (1995-2004). INSGENAR is participating in this joint-initiative
with PDHRE (People`s Decade of Human Rights Education), in order to promote
“human rights communities” in distinct cities in the world. Particularly
in Rosario, we have been working on this idea since 1997. At this time
however, the Institute as well as other organisations are carrying out the
following activities:
“Human Rights Education Days” which will be held on September 17th and
18th at the San José College in Rosario.
A seminar on Security and Human Rights in our City will be held November
12th at the National University of Rosario.
We are also organizing a contest aimed at school children from second
and third grades in all municipal primary schools, to paraphrase, in their
own words, the Declaration of Human Rights. To enter in a submission,
please be aware of the November 29th deadline. The conditions for this
contest are now available at the Institute office and will also be
publicised in the media and throughout all schools.
“The Republic of women, films give us clues”, is an initiative
destined to promote the leadership of women in Latin America and the
Caribbean. Our objective is to stimulate the participation of women who
have the capacity of decision-making. Women are represented from fields as
diverse as labour unions, political parties, and rural and private
enterprise, so that their opinions will invigorate a debate after viewing
the film.
We have thus far, successfully presented films such as, “The Salt of
the Earth” and “Antonia`s Line” for example, that have both intrigued and
excited audiences to participate effectively in the post-film debate.
Upcoming Presentations in association with other interest groups and
organizations are:
4 & 5 / 9 - 9am “CLADEM” and el “Grupo de Mujeres del Desierto de
Lavalle” (Women of the Lavalle Desert), Mendoza

DID YOU KNOW?
The human rights of women are constantly violated in various ways...
Presently in Latin America, women receive between 60% and 70% of the
salaries of men with the same jobs. This gender inequality also crosses
over ethno-racial borders. In a study completed in Brazil, results prove
that if these women are minorities, such as indigenous or black, their
salary would be even less, at only 47%.

Portuguese Writer
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are
endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a
spirit of brotherhood.”
