The People Speak Global Debate

Attention all high school teachers! Want to get your students involved a
truly global debate on some of the most important topics facing the US and
the world today? Want to win an opportunity to attend a Youth Leadership
Summit at the United Nations next summer? Sign up today for The People
Speak Global Debate.

During the 2007-2008 academic year, high school students across the U.S.
and select countries will have the opportunity to participate in The
People Speak: Global Debates. The Global Debates occur during ten days in
October 2007 and March 2008 where students across the globe will be
organizing public debates in their high schools and coordinating a global
vote on the debate topics. October’s debate topic is on the best way
to lower carbon emissions and March will focus on water rights -- two
important topics facing the U.S. and the world.

The Global Debates are an opportunity for students to develop some of the
key skills for becoming active global citizens and informed community
members. In addition to gaining valuable research and public speaking
skills, the students will also be responsible for engaging their
classmates and their larger communities through writing letters to the
editor, inviting elected officials to the debate events, and more!

Participating students and their teachers will have the chance to win a
trip for their four-person team and two teachers to a Global Youth
Leadership Summit at the UN in New York in July 2008. There they will meet
students from around the world and take advantage of special opportunities
including a special UN tour and the chance to meet UN officials. Teachers
will receive a special workshop training on integrating UN curriculum
materials in their classrooms.

The first step is to register your school. Visit
