Dear human rights advocates, I am currently a consultant for the Los Angeles Unified School District helping teachers implement the new Service Learning graduation requirement. I was a classroom teacher for 36 years. Over the years I have interacted with teachers throughout the Southern California area. I am very active in the local council of the National Council for the Social Studies. I have presented many workshops on global and international studies and work with the UCLA International Institute. I am interested in working with a human rights or global studies group that wishes to service teachers and students in the Southern California area. I would like to work with such a group to bring human rights teaching materials and strategies into more schools. I find that most human rights groups in the area have a very limited presence in our schools. I think it is very important for students to have an understanding of the human rights struggles of people around the world. When I was a teacher, the students in my International Relations class convinced the LAUSD school board to stop buying goods made by children. The LAUSD is the second largest school district in the nation. This prohibition is now part of every school district contract. It is this type of activism that will help make students global citizens.
