POSITION DESCRIPTION Title: Education Specialist II Organization: Equitas -International Centre for Human Rights Education (formerly the Canadian Human Rights Foundation, CHRF) Terms: Full-time; Six-month contract, with the possibility of extension Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada Supervisor: Director of Education Application deadline: October 20, 2006 POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Director of Education, the Education Specialist II will work as part of the education team on curriculum development for Equitas' human rights education projects and other related support activities. He/she will work with the education team and program staff on the development, delivery and evaluation of education activities. This position is being offered as a six-month contract. There is a possibility of renewal or permanence of the position at the end of the contract. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1 - Design and Development of Education Materials * Participating in initial discussions on program development with program staff and partner organizations and providing input on training and curriculum related issues. This includes input on, for example: a) the format and length of sessions; b) the methodology; c) the types of training materials; d) need for content experts; e) the amount of development time required. * Preparing needs assessment questionnaires and analyzing data. * Preparing and/or providing input on program outlines to program staff and/or overseas partner organizations. * Carrying out instructional design of content. * Developing text design and producing training materials for publication. * Reviewing and revising materials in consultation with program staff as well as partner organizations. 2 - Evaluation * Designing innovative evaluation tools, analyzing data and preparing reports. 3 - Program Delivery * Participating in the on-site delivery of training sessions in Canada and overseas. This will include working with local partners on the content aspects of the program, briefing of local facilitators, facilitating training sessions, leading and/or participating in daily debriefing sessions during the training and carrying out related administrative functions. 4 - Development of Knowledge in Human Rights and Human Rights Education * Conducting research with a view to building content expertise in Equitas programming areas as well as in human rights education methodology and sharing the information with the education team and program staff. 5 - Participate in the planning, development, evaluation, and delivery of the annual International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP). 6 - Other Education related tasks: * Contribute to the management of the Equitas Library of Education Resources * Conduct information/ training sessions for staff * Contribute to overall life and continued growth and strengthening of the organization 7 - Other tasks which will contribute to the success of the organization. QUALIFICATIONS Skills and Experience * Proven skills and experience in the instructional design, implementation and evaluation of participatory training programs * Strong planning and organization skills * Strong conceptual and analytical skills * Demonstrated problem-solving skills * Ability to work as an effective member of a team * Excellent interpersonal skills * Ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural settings * Knowledge of international human rights and social justice issues * Relevant university degree/work experience * Commitment to teamwork, enthusiasm and adaptability * Experience in design of distance education an asset * Excellent command of Microsoft Word for text design, Access for data analysis and of Excel and PowerPoint (knowledge of Photoshop, and other programs an asset) Language Requirements Ability to communicate orally, as well as read and understand documents in both of Canada’s official languages and excellent writing skills in at least one of the two languages. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Maintaining an English and French version of the on-line Equitas Community, an online meeting place for participants, facilitators, resources persons and staff involved in Equitas human rights training programs. 2. Ensuring overall health and vitality of the Community. This will involve: * Daily monitoring of activity on the Community and acting as a front-line interface to users. * Providing technical and administrative support for daily operation and upkeep. * Adding new forums and discussions and/or making changes to existing ones in consultation with the Education Unit and the relevant moderator(s). * Alerting relevant moderator(s) and Education Unit supervisor to important issues as they arise. * Stimulating/promoting and keeping discussions on track as warranted. * Preparing summaries of important discussions and reporting on these to staff and external stakeholders 3. Providing technical assistance/training/advice to Equitas staff on the functioning of the Community 4. Meeting with the Education Specialist bi-monthly to report on the on-line activity and discuss ways to improve on-line usage, and providing written usage reports. 5. Installing updates to the software, tracking usage and handling problems which may arise 6. Other tasks that will contribute to the well-functioning of the Equitas Community QUALIFICATIONS Skills and Experience * Very good command of "Moodle" or an equivalent computer conferencing software * Very good command of database software for web sites * Very good instructional design, text design, and web design skills * Very good knowledge of Access and other Microsoft Office software * Commitment to teamwork, enthusiasm and adaptability * Excellent interpersonal skills * Ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural settings * Ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment * Independent, able to work under minimal supervision * Ability to work in collaboration with others i.e., staff, interns, volunteers * Excellent work habits: organized, efficient time management skills, able to meet deadlines, flexible * Professional Language Requirements * Excellent written communication skills in English and French is essential Other Considerations * Commitment to Equitas’ mission and values * Eligible to work in Canada For further information about the Equitas consult our website at www.equitas.org.
