1. Travel to Indonesia with Global TeachNet

As part of an ongoing program in summer travel for educators, the National
Peace Corps Association is sponsoring a trip to Indonesia in July 2006.

The NPCA is collaborating with Friendship Force International, which will
be coordinating homestays and travel. Participants will stay with host
families in Jakarta, and spend five days visiting Banda Aceh high schools
in English language conversation classes. There will be an optional side
trip to Lombok and a stop-over in Singapore. This trip provides educators
with an excellent opportunity to experience culture and education in
Indonesia firsthand.

A detailed itinerary and application materials for this trip are available
to download at {http://www.rpcv.org/pages/sitepage.cfm?id=205 }.

Please direct questions about the trip to Exchange Director Sien Lemke at
mailto:icciusa@aol.com {mailto:icciusa@aol.com}. Note that she is
traveling in Indonesia until early February 2006, so there may be a slight
delay in her email response. Please put "NPCA Indonesia trip" or something
similar in the subject line of your email. Do not submit materials
directly to Friendship Force or to NPCA.

2. ICONS simulations

Posted by request:

Have your students experience political negotiations in an interactive,
collaborative Internet-based simulation with students from around the
nation and the world. ICONS exercises can be integrated into high school
curricula in a variety of different classroom situations. Some educators
use ICONS simulations as the centerpiece of an entire course; more often,
educators chose to enhance their current curricula by building ICONS into
existing courses. ICONS simulations can be integrated into World History,
Economics, Geography, and Government.

ICONS offers two types of simulations: distributed and single-site
simulations. Distributed simulations bring together diverse groups of
students from a variety of schools and/or nations to negotiate some of the
biggest and most daunting issues in world politics today. Single-site
simulations have been developed in response to faculty requests for more
flexible exercises that can be more easily integrated into existing
curriculum and can be scheduled any time of the year.

ICONS offers the following single site simulations: Globalization and
Nigerian Oil, International Whaling Commission, World War II & War Crimes,
Berlin Blockade, Africa Regional, and Americas Regional. Single-site
simulations are great for one classroom or several classrooms in one
school. This spring we are offering the International System distributed
simulation for high school students from March 6 to March 27, 2006.
Register early to ensure that you get the country of your choice. For more
information on ICONS simulations and to register, please go to

3. Two Positions at Ross Global Academy Charter School

Posted by request:

Ross Global Academy Charter School, a public K-12 New York City charter
school that will open August 2006 pending authorization by the NY State
Board of Regents, is seeking a Director and a President. These are
remarkable opportunities to become a founding member of an urban public
charter school, developed in collaboration with NYU and Ross Institute,
that is imbued with a global vision and which engages students in
integrated, interdisciplinary learning experiences while preparing them
for the challenges 21st century.

The President and the Director comprise the leadership at the school. The
President oversees the long-term planning and strategic development of the
school. The Director reports to the President, and is responsible for the
day-to-day school operations and programs. Together they articulate the
vision of the school and its future, crafting a culture and climate that
enables the community to engage in activities reflecting the philosophy of
the Ross Model and which encourages all community members to embody the
guiding principles of the institution.

Interested applicants should email a CV and a 2-page statement describing
their strategic vision for a 21st century school and how to implement this
vision in a public urban setting to {mailto:hr@rossinstitute.org } (fax
and hard copy applications not accepted).

4. Free the Slaves

Posted by request:

It’s time to set the history books straight. Slavery did not end in 1865.
Slavery is one of the most terrible human rights abuses taking place
today, yet many people aren’t aware of it. Free the Slaves is working to
change that by raising awareness that slavery still exists—and if we all
work together, we can end it.

This curriculum pack is teacher and student-tested and can be adapted for
classrooms from upper elementary through high school. The Education Pack
has five sections, which you can download for free. This pack explains
modern slavery and places it in the context of global human rights,
compares and contrasts modern slavery with slavery in the Old South and
provides accompanying activities, provides activities to help students
understand human rights and anti-slavery advocacy, and explains the issue
of bonded labor, which is the most common form of slavery, and provides
ways to help. You can also use the resources to find other materials and
organizations to continue your work on the issue of slavery.

Visit {http://www.freetheslaves.net/ } for more details and to download
the curriculum pack.
