New Award for Excellence in Teaching about the Armenian Genocide

THE GENOCIDE EDUCATION PROJECT ANNOUNCES NEW AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN
TEACHING ABOUT THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

San Francisco, CA, November 22, 2005 — The Genocide Education Project is
pleased to announce the creation of the Aharonian Award, an annual award
for secondary level educators who excel in the teaching of the Armenian
Genocide. The purpose of the award is to identify and provide recognition
for an outstanding educator who has implemented lessons on the history of
the Armenian Genocide in her/his curriculum. The lesson plan must have
been used in a classroom during the current year and will be selected by a
panel of educators.

This is the first time that a national award has been offered to secondary
level educators who teach about the Armenian Genocide. "We know that
teachers all over the country are teaching about the Armenian Genocide in
unique and interesting ways," stated Raffi Momjian, Executive Director of
The Genocide Education Project. "With the establishment of the Aharonian
Award, we now have a chance to reward the significant and important work
of educators who teach this essential piece of history."

The deadline for the award is June 2, 2006. Award eligibility requirements
and criteria to submit a lesson plan can be found at www.TeachGenocide.org
and www.GenocideEducation.org . The recipient of the Aharonian Award will
receive a cash award, resources on the Armenian Genocide for him/herself
and the affiliated institution’s library, and publication of the lesson
plan on the www.TeachGenocide.org website.
