[hr-education-na] Integration of HRE within formal education

Dear List Members,

We have already come to the last topic of the on-line Global Forum. Thank
you very much for all your extremely interesting contributions over the
past weeks.

This week we propose to concentrate on the integration of human rights
education within formal education, both at the elementary and secondary
school level as well as within higher education.

The following questions can guide our discussion:

* What successful strategies have you used for integrating human rights
content and values within the curriculum at the elementary and/or
secondary school levels? For example, are there certain subject areas that
lend themselves more easily to HRE? What strategies do you use for
integrating HRE within the classroom when the curricular framework does
not directly reference human rights?

* What are some effective strategies for preparing teachers - both in
pre-service and in-service training - in integrating human rights into
their teaching? Are there any examples of teacher training institutions
that have carried out this responsibility (with or without the support of
NGOs)?

* There may be a greater freedom to address human rights at the university
level. Are there creative ways that we can use this resource to promote
HRE at earlier levels of education?

* How might the rationale and position of HRE at all levels of formal
schooling be strengthened and enhanced?

Please be specific and mention examples from your own work, own country or
region, if possible.

We hope you will share your insights and experiences We also encourage you
to continue to send messages about the first three topics of this on-line
Global Forum: the theoretical framework, legal bases and history of HRE;
goals and objectives of HRE; pedagogy/methodology of HRE.
