funders, academics and other researchers from across Canada as we
together assess Canada's Action Plan Against Racism ( CAPAR ) as well
as share & develop innovative tools, models, resources, strategies
and opportunities for advancing equitable anti-racism and
anti-racialization public policy agendas and initiatives in areas
such as -
- health
- education
- immigration
- justice & policing
- employment & poverty
- media
- culture & the arts
- international instruments & foreign policy
After CAPAR - building a shared community-based anti-racism and
anti-racialization agenda in Canada - what will it take ?
Not only is this the 20th anniversary of Section 15 - it is also
very significantly the 10th anniversary of the shooting death of
Anthony "Dudley" George - aboriginal and treaty rights activist at
the Ontario Ipperwash Provincial Park ( currently the focus of a
provincial public inquiry ), the 40th anniversary of the United
Nations - International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of
Racial Discrimination ( ICERD ) as well as the 400th anniversary of
the first historically documented black African presence in Canada -
Mathieu DaCosta in 1605 !!
In addition to keynote plenary addresses ( tbc ) from -
Phil Fontaine - National Chief, Assemly of First Nations ( Canada )
John Powell - Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity (
Ohio )
Karen Chouhan - The 1990 Trust - Human Rights for Race Equality ( UK

Maya Wiley - Centre for Social Inclusion ( New York )
We also expect to be joined by both the Hon. Raymond Chan - Minister
of State ( Multiculturalism ) - as well as by Her Excellency
Michaelle Jean, 27th Governor General of Canada.

Through a series of panels, keynotes and strategy oriented
roundtable discussions, the conference will work to build shared
awareness, understanding and analysis of the issues and priority
concerns of our diverse communities - as well as develop a common
framework for targeted campaigns and strategies - locally, nationally
as well as internationally !!

Heritage we are currently able to offer a limited number of travel
and accommodation subsidies - on an as-needed request basis !!

capacity to offer these subsidies - we are hoping that wherever
possible your groups, organizations or other local area sponsors will
