Re: Goals and objectives of HRE

Hello all,

I have mentioned this before, but not to this group. I really think the
way to begin is with itinerant teachers who provide in-service education
for teachers on ways to incorporate HRE into their existing curriculum.
There is no discipline that does not touch or is not touched by this
issue. Therefore, I feel it would be beneficial to teach teachers of Math,
Language, Science and Social Science methods for folding issues of human
rights into their class work. This meets the criteria for involving
teachers of many political persuasions while also removing some of the
heat from head teachers and parents who might balk at the idea of one
actual class. Further, it demonstrates to teachers, students and parents
that this is a pan-curricula issue and is not, therefore, restricted to
social science or to one "elective" class. Teaching human rights across
the disciplines achieves the much broader goal of sharing with students,
teachers, parents and administrators that this is a global issue which
affects and is affected by every area of study.

I believe that an HRE teacher training program that establishes groups of
teachers who are available to travel to all schools in a given district,
to teach HRE issues to teachers in all disciplines and ways to incorporate
those lessons into their class work will be the swiftest, most effective
method for reaching the greatest number of students and teachers.

It is likely that we will easily find universities willing to sponsor
these groups of teachers with space and administrative support. The
individual or individuals coordinating these efforts at university offices
could also teach courses for that university to both potential teachers as
well as other scholars in other disciplines, creating a firm working
relationship with each university while establishing an outreach program
to school districts.
