Nepal Human Rights Delegation for Young Leaders

Nepal -- Human Rights Delegation for Young Leaders
March 19 - April 3, 2006 (tentative dates)

Nepal at a Crossroads: A Time for Action and Collaboration with Young
Peacemakers

Global Youth Connect, an international organization for young human rights
advocates, is pleased to announce that we are currently recruiting
participants ages 21-30 from the U.S. to serve as members of a human
rights delegation to Nepal from March 19 – April 3, 2006 (tentative
dates).

This delegation is being organized at the invitation and request of the
Backward Society Education (BASE), a highly-respected grassroots NGO in
Nepal working to organize and support former bonded laborers (kamaiyas).
During this two-week delegation, we will take part in a series of
activities in collaboration with and in support of Nepali youth actively
engaged in peace-building activities in this conflict- torn country. This
program will serve as a critical avenue to connect and support young
people interested in playing a role in helping to bring peace to Nepal.

The delegation will travel from the U.S. to Nepal in order to learn more
about the historical roots of the conflict, how the current human rights
crisis is impacting the development of Nepal and to discuss possibilities
for future peace. We will connect with young Nepalis who are committed to
working for peace. These young peacemakers will join the delegation in an
interactive human rights workshop to build knowledge and skills and
discuss ways in which we can work together on collaborative projects.
Delegation members will also document stories, projects and perspectives
of young Nepalis affected by the conflict. When we return to the U.S., the
information that we gather will be used to help raise awareness and
develop action campaigns to encourage individuals, governments and the
international community to take action to respond to the current human
rights crisis in Nepal.

We are looking for participants who are between the ages of 21-30 and
possess U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the U.S. We will also
accept applications from international student studying full-time at a
U.S. college or university. Most importantly, applicants should possess a
demonstrated interest and experience in human rights, social justice,
activism, community development, international issues and/or South Asian
studies and wish to become part of a longer-term project to raise
awareness about the human rights crisis in Nepal.

The deadline to receive applications is October 28, 2005.
