2. High School Exchange Program Still In Need of Host Families

 > Posted by Request

PAX (Program of Academic Exchange) is looking for host families in six
states to host high school students participating in two State Department
sponsored programs - Partnerships for Learning Youth Exchange and Study
program (YES) and Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX). Most YES
students come here from countries with the large Muslim populations and
FLEX students from Russia and former Soviet republics. The students on
both programs hope to build a better understanding between the U.S. and
their homelands, one family at a time.

The boys and girls (15-18 years old) chosen for the YES and FLEX program
have been identified as outstanding young "ambassadors" and students with
leadership potential. They were selected out of thousands that applied
through a merit-based competition and complicated system of exams and
interviews and have good English. The scholarship provides full medical
insurance and a monthly stipend, as well as a host family clothes
allowance to help the family get their student started. Families can
expect students to help with household chores and participate in family
activities.

PAX, one of the 10 administrators of the grants, believes in the third
goal of Peace Corps - bring the world home - and is looking for host
families in WA, PA, AR, NC, DE, and AK. Host families are asked to provide
a bed, a place for quiet studying, and the love and support any teenager
would need. This is a wonderful chance to make a lifelong friend and help
a young person learn more about America. The families travel without
leaving the security of their home by learning from their student; they
build mutual understanding and, eventually, get a son/daughter in the
other part of the world.

The best hosts are simply curious and warm people, not ones with a
magazine perfect lifestyle. These kids want a reality experience! The
families can host a student for the full school year or be a "welcome"
family for 8-10 weeks until the student is moved to a permanent home!
Please call or email NOW as the students are scheduled to arrive in
mid-August!
Please email Oksana at mailto:oxanap@pax.org or call 1-800-555-6211, ext.
302 and check our website at http://www.pax.org

We hear it all the time from families who host AFS Exchange Students, "We
had no idea how much our family would benefit by this experience!" AFS-USA
needs families of all kinds to share their daily lives with an outstanding
young person from another country and culture.

Contribute to building a more just and peaceful world by making a world of
difference in your community. If you cannot host this school year, please
become an AFS 'Aunt' or 'Uncle' family or an AFS liaison or volunteer.
What the world needs now is...you!

Facts about AFS High School
Exchange Students:

AFS students are selected in their home countries and are eager to become
members of U.S. families, schools, and communities.
AFS students are often praised as being young ambassadors for their
countries.
AFS students hail from all over the world.
Most students arrive in August and remain with families for one year

Host Families:
