Just Updated: Curriculum on the Middle East from the Choices Program Posted by request: "Shifting Sands: Balancing U.S. Interests in the Middle East," a one-week curriculum unit from the Choices Program, is now in its 9th edition. Revised this month, this one-week unit draws students into the policy debate on one of the world's most volatile regions. The unit analyzes the Arab-Israeli conflict, the significance of oil, the politicization of Islam, and the historical issues that have shaped U.S. ties to the region. Additions to the revised unit include: *Coverage of President Bush's policy of promoting freedom and democracy *A discussion of recent events in Lebanon, Egypt, and the Palestinian territories *The death of Yasir Arafat and its impact on the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis *A discussion of the recent fluctuations in the oil market This unit and many other titles can be purchased online from the Choices Program web site at http://www.choices.edu/ or by calling 401.863-3155. Also available: "Iraq: The Challenge of Securing the Peace" can be downloaded from the Teaching with the News section of the Choices web site at http://www.choices.edu/curriculum_twtn.cfm ...and it's free! The Choices Program is an educational outreach program of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.
