1. Global TeachNet Members to Receive Save the Children USA "State of the
World's Mothers" Report

Thanks to a special arrangement with Save the Children USA, Global
TeachNet is sending all members the "State of the World's Mothers" report
with an accompanying lesson plan written by Angene Wilson. This report,
launched annually around Mother's Day, has a 2005 theme of "The Power and
Promise of Girls' Education."

The complete "State of the World's Mothers 2005" and "Mother's Index" is
available online, along with action steps you can take to help more girls
go to school. To download the report, visit
http://www.savethechildren.org. The accompanying lesson plan is also
available online at the NPCA's website at
http://www.rpcv.org/lessons/AIDS.doc and at the Save the Children USA
website at
http://www.savethechildren.org/mothers/report_2005/lesson_plan.asp .

Dues-paying members of Global TeachNet (including National Peace Corps
Association members opting to join Global TeachNet) will receive the
report and lesson plan in the mail shortly!

Your feedback is welcome, and we invite you to please take a short online
survey to share with us your thoughts about the report and its potential
use in the classroom. The survey is available at
http://www.rpcv.org/pages/survey.cfm?id=44.

2. International Classroom Collaboration Projects with Relief
International-Schools Online

Posted by request:

Connect with schools in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Palestinian Territories
and Tajikistan

Relief International- Schools Online is running an exciting connectivity
project with high schools globally. During the upcoming year these
schools will be paired with high schools in the United States for
school-to-school partnerships. Throughout the year partners will
collaborate via information and communication technology to evaluate
research, discuss and report on designated issues related to global civic
education. Methods of collaboration include web-based chats and forums,
e-mail exchanges, online newsletters, and message boards. We also offer
the exciting opportunity for teachers to participate in free exchanges to
the countries they work with!

The goal of the program is to facilitate virtual school-to-school projects
as a means of building international relationships and deepening the
cross-cultural exchange for students and of sharing education
methodologies for teachers. We are looking for passionate, involved
educators who want to explore the world with their students!

For more information on these program please contact Liliana Vazquez at:

3. AFS-USA: Host a Visiting Teacher at Your School!

Posted by request:

AFS-USA will be hosting over 50 visiting teachers from Thailand, China and
Latin America in US K-12 schools for the 05-06 school year. We are still
in need of school placements!

Since 1972, AFS-USA has made it possible for international educators from
other countries to live, work, teach and learn in the United States for
either a semester or a year at a time. A visiting teacher brings a
different area's geography, history, culture, politics and economy to life
in a way that is not just educational but colorful, current and exciting.

All Visiting Teachers are professional educators in their home country;
most are English teachers. Through AFS' Global Educators, participants
expand their knowledge of other cultures and educational systems, exchange
teaching methods, and learn from teachers and administrators, all while
acquiring first hand knowledge of what it's like to live in another
country. Since their hosting costs are borne by AFS-USA (through program
fees or through foundation support), the financial support expected from
host schools is not great.

What does AFS provide?
*All program planning and arrangements
*Pre-departure and arrival orientations
*Placement with host families (Families and schools are not paid to host
AFS teachers. They, like you, are interested in building international
friendships.)
*An international support structure with full time AFS offices in each
country, 24 hour local and international emergency services and a local
AFS volunteer support network in each host community.
*The security of knowing that AFS has more than 50 years experience in
international exchange!

If your school might be interested in hosting a Visiting Teacher for a
year or semester, or you would like further information, please contact
Erin Abrams at mailto:eabrams@afs.org or 800-876-2376.
