1. Global Village 2 Summer 2005 Program

Posted by request:

Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas has long been the home of the highly
successful Global Village Overnight experience, the only experiential
educational program in the country that gives participants a taste of the
“real world” by allowing visitors to experience the challenges of poverty.
Thousands of participants have spent the night in our Zambia or Guatemala
house and experienced first-hand about the difficulties millions people
face every day while trying to feed themselves and their families.

After more than a decade of hosting the one night Global Village Overnight
experience at Heifer Ranch, we are thrilled to announce the opening of our
newest multi-night Global Village program, Global Village 2. This more
in-depth two or three-night experience intended for students in the 10th
grade or above engrosses participants in a world that connects them with
the realities of poverty and hunger. Registrants join a compassionate
community of Global Village 2 alumni and integrate their newfound
awareness and empathy into the choices they make as participants in the
global community. As one recent registrant said, “Global Village 2
provided us with a new perspective on how we can affect the world.”

We have several spots open for Summer 2005, although they are filling
quickly, so plan ahead! To register a group for Global Village 2 call our
Ranch Events office at (501) 889-5124 or e-mail
mailto:ranchevents@heifer.org. To learn more about Heifer International's

3. Archaeology Workshops for Social Studies Teachers

Posted by request:

Work with experienced educators from the Center for Archaeology at Oregon
Ridge Nature Center in Baltimore County and the MNCPPC to learn ways of
integrating archaeology into the Maryland State Department of Education
(MSDE) Curriculum (i.e., Standards and Indicators). During a 7-day field
archaeology course, teachers will participate in excavation, fieldwork,
and hands-on experience in the scientific methods of archaeology, many of
which have applications in math, science, social studies and art.

Participants will also hear from specialists in many different fields on
many topics, receive background readings, and visit parks. This is an
excellent opportunity to learn about American history and archaeology and
integrate this experience into teaching K-12 with a multicultural
perspective.

All selected applicants will receive a two hundred dollar stipend and may
obtain CPD credits. Register through the website at

4. Citizenship and Language Learning: International perspectives

>From the Human Rights Education listserv:

New publication
Edited by Audrey Osler and Hugh Starkey
Trentham Books

Language teachers across the world are increasingly recognising their role
as teachers of intercultural communication. Language learning develops
skills for communication across cultural boundaries. The quality of the
communication depends on respect, tolerance and acceptance of basic
standards of human rights such as equality and dignity.

This volume breaks new ground by bringing together and synthesizing
contributions from practitioners and researchers in language teaching and
citizenship. The book develops a theory of practice of language teaching
and learning for citizenship based on understanding and implementing human
rights in education. It explores representations of cultures; curriculum
and pedagogical frameworks; issues of equality and diversity. Case
studies are drawn from a range of learning contexts around the world and
consider young disadvantaged learners; e-learning exchanges; developing
critical cultural awareness; civic education and language teaching;
women's studies; and empowerment strategies for life long learning.
