Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University

Background

Since 1978, Columbia University's Center for the Study of Human Rights has
promoted human rights research, teaching, advocacy and policy analysis at
Columbia and abroad. Its unique approach seeks to integrate grassroots human
rights activists from the US and overseas into the Center's programs of
teaching, training, research and policy analysis. The resulting exchanges
have not only enriched the skills of these front-line activists and extended
their networks, they have also strengthened the human rights teaching and
research carried out by scholars and students at Columbia, and contributed
to the development of similar programs in South America and Africa.
Moreover, the Center and Columbia faculty have collaborated in many capacity
building initiatives in developing countries across the globe.

The level of interest and activities in human rights at Columbia and beyond
has increased tremendously over the last ten years.  To respond to that
need, the Center for the Study of Human Rights is working to increase its
capabilities with respect to curriculum development and multi-disciplinary
research through increasing its fundraising capacity.  These programs will
enable the University to expand its intellectual outreach and support to
scholars, students, activists, policy and business leaders, government
officials, philanthropists and other stakeholders, worldwide.

To respond to these needs and opportunities, the Center seeks an Associate
Director who will work with Columbia scholars to develop integrated research
projects and diversify the Center's funding base beyond traditional sources
by developing and cultivating new funding opportunities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Associate Director include:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the incumbent is responsible for (1)
working with Columbia scholars in developing integrated research projects
and (2) diversifying the Center's funding base beyond traditional sources by
developing and cultivating new funding opportunities.

Working closely with Columbia faculty and other scholars, the incumbent will
help to identify common research agenda and promote inter-disciplinary
research across departments and schools within the University and beyond,
and develop integrated research projects and proposals accordingly.

The incumbent also works with other human rights programs at Columbia
University to improve curricula and collaboration.  S/he will promote
greater communication and improve the sharing of resources on human rights
among Columbia's different disciplines and departments.

Working closely with the Executive Director and Center staff, the incumbent
will develop fundraising strategies to identify and cultivate new donors and
foundations, diversifying the Center's funding base beyond current sources.
S/he will work collaboratively with the University Development Office to
coordinate joint fundraising efforts.

The incumbent will also work closely with the Executive Director and Center
staff in developing policies and long and short-term strategies for the
Center as well as assume a liaison role with the executive committee of the
Center's Board of Directors and monitor the execution of its strategic plan.

In addition, the incumbent will take on additional projects as they arise.


The Ideal Candidate Should Have the Following Qualifications:

*         Bachelor's degree, plus a minimum of four years' related
experience required;
*         Advanced degree strongly preferred, preferably in the social
sciences;
*         Demonstrated fundraising and proposal writing skills required;
*         Experience in human rights;
*         Experience in University-level teaching and research strongly
preferred;
*         Experience in NGO management, including board relations, resource
development, and creating community support;
*         Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills;
*         Excellent judgment, communication and writing skills;
*         Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
*         Ability to interact with scholars from across the university
spectrum and have strong persuasive and negotiating skills;
*         Fluency in a major language in addition to English required;
