Words That Heal: Using Children's Literature to Address Bullying

http://www.adl.org/education/curriculum_connections/winter_2005/

Children's literature can be an effective tool for addressing the growing
concerns about physical, verbal, and relational bullying by improving
students' ability to understand and cope with problems, and by increasing
empathy and respect for others. The Winter 2005 issue of Curriculum
Connections provides educators with study guides for five books that
address bullying plus an extensive bibliography of selected children's
books on this topic.

Discussion Guides

Study guides with discussion questions, vocabulary, author interviews, and
extension activities are offered for the following books that address the
theme of bullying:

* Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes (grades PreK-1)

* Say Something by Peggy Moss (grades 2-4)

* Nothing Wrong with a Three-Legged Dog by Graham McNamee (grades 3-5)

* The Revealers by Doug Wilhelm (grades 6-8)

* The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake (grades 8 & up)

Additional Resources

The Discussion Guides above are accompanied by:

* Additional extension activities

* An article that highlights the benefits of using literature to deal with
social issues, and provides strategies for selecting and using books to
address bullying

* An annotated bibliography of children's fiction for grades PreK-12

* A fact sheet for educators with statistics on bullying
