Dear Educator Activist,

After a busy summer, an office move, change over of interns and a
department retreat, we are back and more then ready to get into the work
that makes us tick.

This summer was very busy. Thanks to our amazing group of interns, we made
significant progress on a number of resources and programs as well as
managing to facilitate a few workshops. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our outstanding summer interns.

Interns:
Paul Wilkins, Fordham University
Carinne Luck , New York University
Sidra Riaz, Trinity College
Kathleen Milnamow, Trinity College
Sana Khan, Trinity College
Suzanna Dennis, Columbia University

As always, we are extremely grateful to our interns and volunteers.

WORLD PROGRAMME FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION

The advanced edited version of the draft plan of action for the first phase
(2005-2007) of the proposed world programme for human rights education
is now available on the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for
Human Rights (OHCHR). It can be found at:

http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/ctt.asp?u=305607&l=10709

The document will soon be formatted and issued as an official United
Nations document by the appropriate services of the UN General Assembly in
New York.

Your discussions last June and July during the Global Consultation on the
Global HRE List and regional HRE listservs have been taken into
consideration by the experts who gathered in Geneva in September 2004 to
provide comments to the first draft of this document, and we are grateful
for your input.

The UN General Assembly, which is currently meeting in New York, will
consider and may adopt this draft plan of action on 10 December, when it
devotes a plenary session to human rights education. It is envisaged that
such session will mark the end of the UN Decade for Human Rights Education
(1995-2004) and the launch of the new proposed World Programme for Human
Rights Education.

As we approach Human Rights Day, more initiatives will be taken at the
international level to highlight these important human rights education
events; we will keep you informed of related developments.

REVIEW

Pilot Classrooms Needed - International Rights Curriculum

Youth Advocate Program International (YAPI) is seeking teachers to
review new human rights education materials on:

1. Modern Child Slavery
2. Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
3. Child Soldiers
4. Children infected and impacted by HIV/AIDS.

The Human Rights modules contain the materials teachers' need to
introduce an issue (e.g.: teacher guide, activities, and PowerPoint
presentations). These modules are easily downloaded from the Internet,
offering teachers access to quality education tools for free. The
modules are at www.yapi.org.

YAPI is seeking teachers and pilot classrooms that will use at least two
modules this fall, requiring a total of two 45-minute classroom
sessions. All of the participating schools will be recognized on the
YAPI website for the next two years.

If you'd like to pilot two of the modules (45 minutes each) in your
classroom, please contact Youth Advocate Program International at
202-244-1986 or pschoof@yapi.org.
