DEMYSTIFYING HUMAN RIGHTS: AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE FOR EDUCATORS Organized by HREA and Amnesty International-USA Saturdays - April 30 and May 14, 2005 Amnesty Internationl Northeast Regional Office AIUSA 58 Day Street Davis Square Somerville, MA DEMYSTIFYING HUMAN RIGHTS: AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE FOR EDUCATORS This 12-hour course will introduce high school teachers of history, government or social studies to the field of international human rights. The course will take place on two Saturdays - April 30th and May 14th, 2005 - at 58 Day Street, Davis Square, Somerville, MA. PDP credits are available. The course will look at the philosophical and historical origins of human rights, from natural law to the international law that created the United Nations. We will also examine international human rights standards, exploring the treaties that constitute this system and how these are intended to influence the actions of nation states. Participants will explore in hands-on ways how human rights can be integrated into classroom teaching. The course will be conducted through two in-person sessions. It will include a core text on the history of human rights, primary documents, and will also use film and the web. The course is co-sponsored by Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) and Amnesty International's Northeast Regional Office.
