This one-day workshop will introduce secondary school teachers to the field of international human rights. The workshop will overview the philosophical and historical origins of human rights, from natural law to the international law that created the United Nations. We will also examine international human rights standards, learning about treaties that constitute this system and how these are intended to influence the actions of nation states. The workshop will use primary documents and learning tools for the classroom. This is an introductory workshop for teachers who are interested to know more about the international human rights system. The workshop will take place from 9am - 3pm at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Massachusetts teachers may apply for 5 PDP credits.
