2. NetAid Research Recommends Focusing on Youth to Build Domestic Support
for International Development

From: NetAid Press Release, June 23, 2004 (full text at
http://www.netaid.org/press/press_article_22.pt)

The non-profit organization NetAid today issued a report recommending that
efforts to increase American support for international development focus
on young people. The report, entitled "Learning for Change: Strategies to
Build a Domestic Constituency for International Development", examines how
to increase public support in order to secure American leadership in the
fight against global poverty. It concludes that this can best be
accomplished through large-scale and innovative education programs for
young people. NetAid's research, which was supported by The William and
Flora Hewlett Foundation, was conducted between August 2003 and January
2004, and included interviews with over 50 experts on public engagement in
international development and related issues. Citing successful European
models, "Learning for Change" proposes youth-focused programs that are
comprehensive, educational and perspective-changing.

Domestic Constituency for International Development" can be found online

31 on http://www.SERVEnet.org

In celebration of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace for the
Children of the World (2001-2010), for the entire month of August,
YouthActionNet will highlight issues related to peace affecting young
people around the globe. As part of their commemoration they have launched
the YouthActionNet Essay Contest. The essay contest offers aspiring and
accomplished youth leaders the chance to put forth their ideas for a
better world - and have them heard. This year's theme is peace. Daily,
newspapers report about deadly conflicts around the world. Violence,
hatred, and intolerance of differences are an unfortunate part of life in
too many communities. Yet, at the same time, there are those who are
working to nurture greater peace and understanding. YouthActionNet invites
you to participate in the YouthActionNet essay contest and share your
ideas and experiences in promoting peace with others.

Essays must be received by October 1. For more information about the
